Audio Books from the Public Domain

Vic January 14th, 2007

I’m sure most of you are familiar with the term Public Domain if not you can go Here to learn about it.

Anyway as I was surfing the net the other day I ran across a website with what I consider to be very noble objective and that is to make all the works in the pubic domain available on the internet in audio format for free.

The website is Librivox and it can be found Here. Here’s what they say about themselves on their home page: “LibriVox is a hope, an experiment, and a question: can the net harness a bunch of volunteers to help bring books in the public domain to life through podcasting?”

Librivox maintains a new searchable catalog of all their completed projects and their works in progress at Here.

If you’re at all interested in listening to any of the old classics I highly recommend that you give them a visit and see if any of your favorites are alvailable. And if you can’t find what your looking for they take requests.

You may recognize  many of these titles that I ran across on my visit: War of the Worlds, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Tom Sawyer, Treasure Island, A Tale of Two Cities, Oliver Twist, Heidi, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz, A Christmas Carol, The Invisible Man and that’s just to name a few.

All of the work is done by volunteers and if you’d be interested in helping they have many positions available.

It really is a wonderful site, I hope you enjoy it.

A Quick Look at MP3 Players

Vic January 8th, 2007

Many people think of MP3 players as a device soley for the purpose of playing music. This of course is not at all true. Today the MP3 player is widely used for listening to audio books.

One factor that’s making them so popular for this is there portability. Now instead of being stuck at your computer or stereo to listen to your latest audio book you can take it with you wherever you go.

However when used to listen to audio books you’re going to find that there are a few features you’ll want to look for in an MP3 player that will really make a big difference in your listening enjoyment.

Below are some of the factors to consider that will help you get the right MP3 for listening to your audio books:

1. The number one factor to consider is the way the player handles interruption. When you’re listening is interrupted you’re going to want to be able to continue from the same spot in the book were you left off. Make sure the player you choose gives you that option.

2. Make sure the player has a large memory. Audio Books are large files and require a lot of space on the player so the larger the memory the better.

3. Make sure the player has good volume. You may find yourself wanting to listen to your audio book in a noisy area and you’ll want the volume to be able to support that option.

4. Size may be another factor that you should consider, however don’t sacrifice quality for a smaller size. Look for players that are made by the larger brand name companies. A quality player will make listening much more enjoyable and will last much longer.

5. This one may be as important as #1 be sure the player is capable of playing encrypted files. Many audio books are encrypted by the publishers to protect their copyrights, therefore your MP3 player will need to be capable of playing files that are using Digital Rights Management (DRM). This is often referred to as WMA DRM.

I hope you’ve found this information useful and that it will make looking for the right player for you a little

Happy New Year

Vic January 1st, 2007

I trust all of you had a great Christmas and I hope you were able to spend at least part of it with your family and friends. I know for me getting together with my family to celebrate the birth of Christ is the best part. All the food and gifts are great but none of that means much without family. And as far as gifts go the greatest gift of all is Jesus.

Now on to the New Year.

Today marks the beginining of a whole new year and I’d like to take this opportunity to wish each and every one of you a very blessed one.

Moving forward into this new year the I’d like to talk a little about our mission statement.

Now in Audio Mission Statement:
To provide our readers with the latest news and information about one of the fastest growing segments of the Digital Revolution…”Downloadable Audio Content” in order that their lives may be enriched by it.

But what is the Digital Revolution and what exactly is “Downloadable Audio Content” and how can it enrich our lifes?

The Digital Revolution is the cycle of chance that’s been brought about by the computer age and it incompasses all of the technology that the computer and digital age has ushered in.

“Downloadable Audio Content” is but one small but fast growing segment of this revolution or cycle of chance if you will. Audio Books are without a doubt the most well known form of this content but it’s not the only form. Downloadable Audio Content can also take the form of teleseminars, podcasts, recorded live events, radio broadcasts and much more.

Now that you have a better idea of what “Downloadable Audio Content” is, I’m sure you’re beginining to see how it can enrich our lives. One obvious way it enriches our lives is by simply making it much easier for us to find, purchase and use the content of our choice.

With “Downloadable Audio Content” there’s no trip to the book store to find it, no standing in line to purchase it and the flexibility in the ways that you can use it is unparalleled with other types of media.

“Downloadable Audio Content” also gives us the unique advantage of doing other things while we’re listening to it rather than having to read it. Today it’s possible for us to be entertained by an audio book or learn more about one of our favorite subjects from a teleseminar or podcast while commuting to or from work, cooking, cleaning the house, exercising, working in the garden or walking the dog.

Listening to audio books even has advantages over reading a printed book in bed? It’s much easier to get comfortable, there’s no pages to turn and you don’t need your glasses or light.

If you haven’t already I’m sure you’ll think of many more advantages to “Downloadable Audio Content”. If you’d like to learn more there’s four great videos that will show you step by step how to find, purchase and download the book or books of your choice HERE.

I’m proud to be part of this new technology and truly believe it can enrich our lifes in many ways. In the weeks and months ahead I’ll be searching for and providing you with the very latest news and information about this small but very exciting segment of this new technology. I’ll also be posting audio book reviews and featuring some of the best selling titles available as audio books.

If you haven’t already done so please remember to bookmark this site or sign-up for our RSS Feed.

Until next time happy listening and God Bless.
