Audio Books from the Public Domain

Vic January 14th, 2007

I’m sure most of you are familiar with the term Public Domain if not you can go Here to learn about it.

Anyway as I was surfing the net the other day I ran across a website with what I consider to be very noble objective and that is to make all the works in the pubic domain available on the internet in audio format for free.

The website is Librivox and it can be found Here. Here’s what they say about themselves on their home page: “LibriVox is a hope, an experiment, and a question: can the net harness a bunch of volunteers to help bring books in the public domain to life through podcasting?”

Librivox maintains a new searchable catalog of all their completed projects and their works in progress at Here.

If you’re at all interested in listening to any of the old classics I highly recommend that you give them a visit and see if any of your favorites are alvailable. And if you can’t find what your looking for they take requests.

You may recognize  many of these titles that I ran across on my visit: War of the Worlds, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Tom Sawyer, Treasure Island, A Tale of Two Cities, Oliver Twist, Heidi, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz, A Christmas Carol, The Invisible Man and that’s just to name a few.

All of the work is done by volunteers and if you’d be interested in helping they have many positions available.

It really is a wonderful site, I hope you enjoy it.

[...] Our congratulations go out to LibriVox on the release of their 1,000th public domain audio book.  We first told you about LibriVox in January of this year. You can review that post here. Since than they show no signs of slowing down. Their mission is to record and freely distribute as many public domain audio books as possible with the help of volunteer narrators.   [...]
