Isn't the internet great? All this free content and so little time.

Free is indeed a great price and that includes audio books. Yes there are a number of places on the internet that offer free downloadable audio books. Below you'll find a list of the best ones that I know about. 

1. Project Gutenberg: The hub for all things in the public domain is a good place to start. Project Gutenberg's maintains a directory of human-read and computer generated audio books you can download.

2. LibriVox: LibriVox is a totally volunteer, open source, free content, public domain project which contains human-read books from the public domain. Their goal is to make all public domain books available as free downloadable audio books.
3. Literal Systems: This site does not have quite as large as selection, but they are all free still. Also, every book seems to be only in MP3 format – which is usually my preference anyway.
4. AudioBooksForFree.com: While this site does have over a thousand free audio books they are of lower quality. Recorded in (8 Kb/sec) the free audio books are fine for most listeners. A better quality download is however available but at a price.
5. PodioBooks: This site offers portions of audio books delivered via RSS feeds. All of the books are provided by the authors for free. Many authors do this to get exposure for their work, others do it in the hopes you'll buy their next work in development. Still others simply do it for the sheer joy of writing. Donations are excepted and the Authors receive 75% of all the proceeds and the remainder goes to site maintenance.
6. Digital Age Publishing: Yes our very own audio book store has 44 totally free downloadable audio books for you listening pleasure. Enjoy
7. Booksshouldbefree: This site has many audio books as well as print books available for free.

Well there you have it. This list should keep you busy for a while and as I find more I'll update it.
